Supporting others? Support your energy first.

Leading Self

Calendar says: "6 am: Gym"
Body & brain say: "6 am: Sleep. Hit snooze."

One Idea: Support your energy

You know what you should do. Move your body. Sleep enough. Make time for people who fill you up. Fuel yourself with something other than coffee and snacks.

And yet, there is a gap between what you know and what you do. You hold your team together all day, work through lunch, and realize at 6 pm that you've barely had any water. (And no, coffee doesn't count as hydration.)

This month, our MindFittery Practice focuses on energy management.

You can have excellent time management skills, but without energy management, the system breaks down. You may have the time, but not the energy, or the mental and emotional bandwidth. That shows up in how you lead: your communication, your patience, your performance.

For me, energy management is closely tied to exercise. And yes, I still catch myself in old patterns: procrastination, perfectionism, and then judging myself for not living up to my own high standards.

For some time now, morning exercise has lived on my calendar while I kept hitting "snooze" on my phone. I did move my arm and fingers, but I'm afraid that wasn't quite enough exercise for my body 😅

Some big life changes made early mornings harder. My eating, movement, and meditation routines got disrupted, and I started feeling it in my energy. So this week, I'm resetting with a simple intention: improve my movement by 10%. I want to show up for others from a more grounded, lighter place (rather than "oh, my back hurts from sitting so much, and what's that hump behind my neck doing there?").

I invite you to do this practice with me.

This week's practice: 10% Improvement

1. Pick your area. What would support your energy most this month?

  • Movement
  • Eating & nutrition
  • Sleep & rest
  • Social support & connection (a big part of mental and emotional energy)
  • Physical health
  • Something else

Mine: movement.

2. Define your 10%. What would a 10% improvement look like this week?

Mine: a morning walk at least 3 times this week.

3. Plan for obstacles. What could get in the way, and what support can you put in place?

Mine: my snooze habit, plus real tiredness from not enough sleep. My support: in bed by 10 pm, walks on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and a quick Friday reflection on what worked and what didn't. I'll repeat this weekly so that by the end of October, a 10-minute morning walk is simply part of my routine.

Your turn: What's your 10% this week? Hit reply and tell me. Saying it out loud makes it real, and I'll be checking in on my own walks on Friday too.

Next week, we'll explore relational fitness and how our relationships affect our energy.

With care and appreciation for you and your inner work,

A frustrated leader and a worried team member, with a jagged line between them turning into a calm wave.

Leading Others “Why does this keep happening? I’ve explained it three times, and it’s still not done right. Now I have to talk to them again...” Meanwhile, down the hall: “I’m dreading this meeting. They always seem rushed and upset with me.” Same meeting. Same energy drain. Different reasons. First, a quick check-in: Last week I committed to three morning walks as part of my 10% energy improvement. Result: only one happened in the morning, but I walked mid-morning or in the afternoon...

Practice Lab From the Toolkit The 1-Minute Reset "Wow, that meeting was tiring!" Sound familiar? We know how to recharge almost everything else in our lives. One Idea: Charging Your Inner Battery Every day, I charge my phone, sometimes twice a day. My laptop stays plugged in so I can work. I charge my watch, even my car. Yet for years, I had no system for recharging my own energy. A few years back, with 5 a.m. calls and workdays running until 6 p.m., I needed to figure out how to sustain my...

Strategic Reset Leading Forward See things clearly & kindly "I don't even remember what happened last month. Things have been so crazy busy, and I feel so behind." One Idea: Balanced Check In As the end of the month approaches, I tend to feel both dread and excitement. I feel dread when my brain fixates on everything I haven't done yet: "There's so little time. Why does it go by so fast?!" In that moment, I'm trapped in my brain's negativity bias, which overemphasizes anything that isn't the...
